The Grand Lodge of British Freemasonry in Germany

For over half a century, the Grand Lodge of British Freemasonry in Germany (GL BFG) has upheld the values of Freemasonry, fostering a unique blend of tradition, community, and personal development.

As part of a global fraternity that transcends borders, we invite individuals who seek to better themselves and make a positive impact on the world around them to explore our lodges and become part of a worldwide brotherhood.

A Rich History in Germany

The story of British Freemasonry in Germany dates back more than 50 years, beginning shortly after the end of World War II. On March 30, 1957, our first lodge—New Absalom Lodge—was established in Düsseldorf. This marked the official beginning of British Freemasonry’s presence in Germany. Soon after, in response to growing interest and membership, the Provincial Grand Lodge of British Freemasons in Germany was founded.

In 1980, the Grand Lodge of British Freemasonry in Germany (GL BFG) was formally established, becoming an integral part of the United Grand Lodges of Germany (Vereinigte Großlogen von Deutschland, VGLvD), which includes four other constituent Grand Lodges. Through this connection, we continue to honor both our British heritage and our deep ties to the German Masonic tradition.

Freemasonry in a German Context

While our roots are British, the GL BFG is proud to be a truly international Grand Lodge. We have members from all over the world, reflecting the diversity of experiences, cultures, and perspectives that enrich our fraternity. Despite being part of a German Masonic system, our lodges offer English-speaking environments that create a bridge between the local and global Masonic traditions.

As a member of the United Grand Lodges of Germany, the GL BFG adheres to the core Masonic values of integrity, tolerance, and brotherly love. We provide a unique platform where members can engage in self-reflection, ethical discussions, and charitable work while forming lasting friendships across borders.

Our Lodges: A Geographic Reach Across Germany

The GL BFG currently oversees 19 active lodges, spread across Germany, offering members the opportunity to participate in Masonic activities, no matter where they are located. From the northern city of Hamburg, through Berlin in the east, Düsseldorf in the west, to Munich in the south, our lodges cover the breadth of Germany. Our largest concentration of lodges is in the North-West, a legacy of the British Forces’ presence in post-war Germany.

Each of these lodges maintains the distinctive character of British Freemasonry, while also reflecting the unique cultures of the regions in which they are situated. This geographic spread ensures that individuals interested in Freemasonry can find a lodge nearby, where they will be welcomed and encouraged to grow personally and fraternally.

Becoming a Part of the GL BFG

If you are interested in learning more about Freemasonry or exploring the possibility of joining, we invite you to take the first step. Our lodges regularly host Guest Evenings, where prospective members can meet with current Masons, learn about the history and values of Freemasonry, and ask any questions they may have.

Becoming a Freemason is a journey of self-discovery, growth, and connection. By joining the Grand Lodge of British Freemasonry in Germany, you will become part of a centuries-old tradition that is dedicated to personal development, brotherhood, and the betterment of society.

The Seal

The late Bro. Theodor Vogel, Past Grand Master of the United Grand Lodges of Germany, had this seal reproduced from the United Grand Lodge AF & AM. It comprises a square and compasses within a linked chain. This combined with the Seal of the Grand Land Lodge of the Freemasons Order comprising a Triangle and a Key bound thereto.

The Triangle and Key together also symbolize the Trowel. The Chain is displayed in three sections each exposing three links and thus symbolizing the “Three times Three” common to German Freemasonry. The EAGLE symbolizes Germany, the LION Great Britain. The THREE CASTLES are to remind us of the original Provincial Grand Lodge of British Freemasons in Germany. ESTO PERPETUA means “May it last forever”.
